I.N. Middle school needs to start later in the day

Some people believe that middle school starts at a good time, but I disagree. In other words middle school starts too early. This does not make sense because so many kids are tired in the morning and they can’t think straight. We all know that when middle school kids are tired they won’t be able to work to their full potential. If middle school starts later then students will not be as tired and they can have a good healthy breakfast. When you have a good breakfast and eat right your mind is clear.

Imagine if your middle schooler is having problems sleeping at night and he or she has to get up early and get ready for school. Since they didn’t get a good night sleep they woke up late and didn’t get a good breakfast. Well at school he remembered that they had a big test that is worth a lot of points. This leads to them not doing well on the test, because he did not have a good night’s rest and breakfast. Then they will go home and do it over and over again.

Many experts agree middle school should start later according to the article “Let them Sleep” by the AAP it states “Studies show Adolescence that don’t get enough sleep will have physical and mental health problems.” What’s obvious here is that the kids will have medical problems if they don’t get enough sleep.

Another source that I found proves my point that middle school should start later in the article, Skipping breakfast is not a good idea in the long run, by Lauren Otto. This article states “America college of cardiology shows skipping breakfast you will have a higher risk of getting atherosclerosis”… this article shows without a good healthy breakfast you have a better chance of having medical problems.

My last source is by the AASM/and that article is called delaying middle school and high school start times is beneficial to students. It states “ the AASM recommends 13 to 18 years of age should sleep 13 to 18 hours on a regular basis”. What is obvious here is that 13 to 18 is most of the ages you are in middle school so that shows that middle schoolers need sleep.

In conclusion, some kids that go to middle school are suffering from lack of sleep because their school starts too early. We need to let the children sleep. We have a choice to make; middle school kids get up early they are grumpy, and they can’t think straight or we can tell the principle that the middle schoolers need more sleep and school needs to start later for the kids that go to middle school. I hope we can  make the right choice.

A.H. argues… Video games are innocent!

Many People think that violent video games increase the violence level of teens, but I disagree. What I’m trying to say is that a violent video game won’t make a teen want to mug someone.

This makes sense because most teens enjoy games like GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5) because it’s a game that gives you endless possabilities.

Imagine a teen who just got home from school, he sets his backpack down, walks to his room, turns on his console and loads up Grand Theft Auto 5, then he begins to play, hitting everything in sight. He’s giggling inside at the endless possabilities he has, he could steal a plane, drive off a cliff, or casually drive an army tank through downtown. Each dangerous and fun activity relieves his stress and fills him with thrill and excitement.

The facts don’t lie, according to Zoe Kleinman, a technology reporter from BBC News, “If you play 3 hours of call of duty, you might feel a little pumped, but you are not going to go out and mug someone.” As Zoe Kleinman points out, even if you played a violent video game for a long period of time without stopping, you aren’t going to go out and commit a crime.

According to Sciencedaily.com, “ Researchers in Germany used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on long-term players of violent video games and found that they had the same neural response to emotionally provocative images as non-gamers.” What’s important to notice here is that long-term players of violent video games had the same response to provocative images as the non-gamers did, which shows that the empathy of a person is not affected by violent video games.

According to Susan Scutti from CNN,” Basically, by keeping young males busy with things they like “ — and this would include everything from playing sports and collecting stamps to playing first-person shooter video games — “ you keep them off the streets and out of trouble.” As Susan Scutti stated, if parents keep their children occupied with things like sports and video games, they would be keeping them off the streets and away from crime.

Even though the evidence is overwhelming, there are still people who believe this, “ Individuals who had played violent, compared with non-violent, games were also less likely to report hearing a fight staged outside the laboratory, judged the fight less serious, and were slow to respond when they offered help.” At first, this might seem true, but there are some things that are off. The scientists/company that conducted the study could have paid the test subjects to do what they want to happen, or they could have changed the data. There’s a ton of things they could have done.

As I’ve just proven, violent video games don’t affect the empathy of a person, but rather calm a stressed or aggravated person. Parents always think that M (Mature/18+) rated games make teens violent, that is false. We have a choice to make, we can keep assuming that when a student decides to shoot up a school, they were directed to because he played Call of Duty, and keep making video game giants like Rockstar and Activision look bad because parents assume that every bad choice that a teen makes is because he/she played a violent video game like Call of Duty. Or we can state the evidence and prove that no matter how violent the video game, it wont make someone go out and run around shooting. I hope, for the sake of our entertainment and safety, that humanity make the right choice.

S.J. demands… Teens Should Have More Education on Drugs!

Teenagers are misusing drugs and buying illegal ones and they are dying from this. Teens need to take control of their lives. There should be more education for teens about drug usage. What I’m trying to say is, teens should have more education and supervision about drugs. Drugs are America’s biggest killer. At the end of May, 2017, the total amount of drugs that have killed Americans was, 66,324. This has gone up thousands of number over the years.  These teens do not know anything about this because, they were not taught or supervised so, they think that it’s cool to do drugs. Teens need to be taught and supervised so, they don’t do drugs

This makes so much sense because, so many teens die from using these drugs. These teens were not taught about it in school so, they think that it’s cool to do drugs. They don’t think that they can get addicted because it was a one time thing but one time, is all it takes to get hooked. Some drugs that are very addictive are heroin, weed, cocaine, and alcohol. Teens think that by using any of these once that, nothing will happen but opioids in the brain tells the body that you need it. So by doing it once, you’re automatically going to get hooked. Imagine this, a teenager who is uneducated about what drugs do to the body takes too many of some type. This teen who overdosed on these harmful drugs lays on their bedroom floor with his or hers family not knowing what just happened to them. These teens never had a chance to experience the joys of life because they got sucked into a deep dark hole of addiction. This teen dies because drugs took control of their life and decisions.

The experts and numbers don’t lie. According to expert Mr.Galloway in the article, Speaker Urges Parents to Stay Alert About Teen Drug Usage Mrt.com , “When children think that they’re safe and that their parents are their friends, then they are more likely to do things that are illegal because they can hide it and conceal it more easily.” Almost all teens who are doing drugs, tend to feel closer to their parents because they think that if they’re closer to them that they won’t be in as much trouble but, they are incorrect. Ask your kids questions to help prevent these drugs from being a part of their life. Many experts agree. Galloway points out that, “You did not do the same things your kids are doing now. Everything is more potent now.” Mrt.com. What’s important to notice here is that, Galloway is urging parents to watch what their kids are doing, what type of people they’re hanging out, with and, what they’re trying to hide. Teens tend to know that their parents won’t be expecting them to have drugs because when their parents were that age, there was not any of this kind of stuff at their age.

This is not an isolated example. Galloway tells us, “It’s fantastic because all it takes is one person saved to make it all worthwhile.”Mrt.com.  He said before the event. “I’ve got to think that two year of this will hopefully help 100-plus people here both years.” What Galloway is trying to explain is that, he is hoping to help teen struggling with addiction from drugs and trying to get them the education and help they need. He’s trying to help them in rehab centers so they stop doing these drugs and ruining their lives. He’s taking them to rehad so they do not accidently overdose. These teens are getting the help they need there.

Certainly some people say that teens using drugs isn’t always a bad thing. Simon Jasper, a spokesperson from The NIDA Blog Team states, “Some drugs such as doctor prescribed drugs are not bad for teens.” However, some of these prescription drugs are harmful towards teens. There are several issues with these prescriptions drugs . 1. Teens can give these drugs to their friends. 2. They can take too many and be harmed very badly. 3. Just because these drugs are not supposed to be used as bad drugs, does not mean teens will not use them as such. Therefore, even though some of these drugs that are not supposed to harm us, they still can and teens misuse a lot of these drugs. All drugs are bad.

As I’ve proven, teens are using drugs and concealing them when they feel closer to their parents or guardians. You have to observe your children carefully and monitor what type of friends that they are hanging out with, where they are, and try to find any possible places that your child would hides drugs. We have a choice to make. We can educated and have more classes about drug usage for children and monitor them or, we can let our children stay uneducated and unmonitored and let them continue to do these drugs. I hope, for the sake of our children’s future, that we choose wisely!

A.C.believes…Phones are bad for you at night.

I used to think that looking at your phone before night was a good thing but now I realize that getting on your phone before you go to bed is bad. What I’m trying to say is that you should not look at your phone before you go to bed.

This makes sense because looking at  your phone phone hurts your eyes also it wants us to stay up and keep looking at your phone and stay awake.

Imagine you have a interview tomorrow and the interview is at 8:00AM. You get in bed and check your FaceBook account, then you check the time and it’s already 12:00PM. You put your phone down and try to go to bed but you keep on turning and twisting. Finally you go to bed but the  time is already 1:00AM. In the morning you wake up and check the time and it’s 9:30 AM. You get up and check your phone and you’ve missed 5 calls form the place you wanted to interview at so you call them back, and they answer and say sorry but somebody has taken your job. Now you don’t have a job all because you stayed up late on your phone.

A lot people think that looking at you phone before you go to bed is bad even some experts agree. According to Damon Brees, a senior tech editor for the Huffington Post. “Essentially  by staring into our phones just before bed we’re actually soaking up a stream of photos which tells our brain to stay awake.” Damon Brees suggest that if you stay on your phone for a long time you want to stay awake and keep looking at your phone.

In another statement by Susan Scuttin from CNN she says “Analyzing the data, the researchers discover that on average participants used their smartphone for a total of 38.4 hours over a 30 day period.” What scuttin is trying to say is that we use our phone way too much. If there has not been enough proof already I have some more.

In an essay by the instance of penn state SC200 course says “The blue light is so strong that when or brain receives the light it comes off as a sun glare which results in our sleep time being pushed back as well as our melatonin not being released from our brains.” What is obvious here is that the blu light is the thing inside our phones that is wanting us to stay awake. Also the blue light is the light in the sun that gives us energy indicating that the light is very powerful.

On the other hand some people think different. Bonnie Crow from It Still Works says. “A cell phone gives your child a way to be more responsible.” However, I feel it may not be the greatest idea to give your child a phone because they can lose the phone or break it. They could also be looking at their phone at night which makes them not pay attention in school therefore it is not the greatest idea to give your child a phone.

As I have proven it is bad to use your phone before you go to bed. We have a choice to make we can either stay on our phones all night and not have a good tomorrow or we could  put our phones down and have a good tomorrow! I hope that we will make the right decision,

M.S. shouts… Please save our electricity!

Many people think that over using electricity is normal and fine, but I think otherwise, and that people should save electricity. In other words, I think people should stop overusing electricity so, it can be saved for the future of humans.

This makes sense because  over using coal-powered electricity is helping us produce global  warming and power outs. This means that we must stop using coal powered energy,or must be responsible  to save our energy.

Just imagine that you are living in the year 2050 and you turn the lamp on in your room. There you are the murderer of the last wild polar bear. The bear runs out food and dies. You have just destroyed for many their favorite animal, and all you did was turn the light on. This proves that if you don’t want to kill a majestic animal like the polar bear you should save electricity.

Many other people agree well. According to Donnelle Eller a schocalar of green energy” the compounds found through the Muscatine are indicators of  possible coal ash contamination.” This shows that a foreign river the Muscatine is suffering  from environmental changes from a coal-powered energy plant. This means that if you want to drink water, you should save electricity.

Anther example proves this and the facts don’t lie. In, a study by ,Ecomark, shows that “there’s a problem: 72% of all water pollution comes from coal-fired power plants.”this proves that all most all of water pollution comes from coal-power plants. Therefore, it is easy to deduct that overusing electricity is terrible and we as humans should save our energy.

Yet another, testimony that proves saving energy is a adequate idea is by Amin Ahem interviewed for

Dawn News. He states that “Operational inefficiencies with high technical losses impact the environment, is contributing to  high greenhouse gas emissions.” This means that greenhouse gas also known as coal-powered energy or, dirty energy is contributing to global warming. So, it is obvious that over using energy is terrible and we should conserve  our electricity.

However, not all people agree that global warming is real and that we should conserve. In fact, in an article by New York Times while interviewing Toby Wilder found “there are many certainly many Americans who remain unified or doubtful.” Also Toby Wilder “found it hard to imagine that human-caused climate change was anything but a hoax propagated by elites who fly private jets.” He said that, “ if they are wasting more fuel in a month than I do in my lifetime, then how can I believe it,?” However, this is inaccurate and proves nothing. Elites who fly private jets have no choice but to use fossil fuels. Therefore, this is completely a matter of opinion and inaccurate. Although, saving electricity is a brilliant idea and should be followed.

In sum, overusing electricity is harmful and we should conserve our energy. The energy is creating global warming and is slowly killing our animals. The coal-powered power plants put ash in the water we drink causing sickness. In conclusion, something has to change; people shouldn’t be able to turn on the lights and end a majestic animal like the polar bear. We have a choice to make we can either over-using  electricity and watch the polar bear die,or we can stop overusing our electricity and be civilized. Humans and animals shouldn’t have to suffer because someone left the light on. I hope for the sake of all of us we will chose wisely.

S.T. Blurts… No Steroid users in The Hall of Fame!

Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering allowing players that took steroids to be in the Hall of Fame. This is a bad decision and I think otherwise. The point is that this drug is a cheating device and players the cheat should not be rewarded the Hall of Fame. Players that took steroids are getting more Hall of Fame votes that players that didn’t take steroids. The players that didn’t take steroids feel they are treated unfairly with these voting results. Hall of Fame inductance is given to the 75% vote receivers by veteran baseball writers.

Taking steroids can make a player stronger. A player that becomes stronger is improving their playing abilities. Imagine a player with significant performance increase who has taken steroids. For example, Barry Bonds, a very good hitter, took steroids without anybody knowing until he hit the farthest ever home run to date. He was then checked for usage of steroids. It was found that Bonds took steroid shots in his right thigh so his baseball pants would cover the skin marks of the needles. Bonds did this for about two years. In the most recent Hall of Fame voting Bonds is getting a significant number of votes. This voting result is based on Bonds enhanced performance from steroid usage and not his natural abilities.

MLB sports analysts agree that the Hall of Fame entry rule should change. According to to analyst and former player, Joe Morgan, “By cheating, they put up huge numbers, and they made great players who didn’t cheat look smaller by comparison, taking away from their achievements and consideration for the Hall of Fame. That’s not right.” What Morgan is pointing out is that slowly, but surely, steroids are ruining the game of baseball. He is also pointing out that once in the Hall of Fame you’re always in the Hall of Fame.

The experts and numbers don’t lie. In another example Jerry Crasnick states, “… Mitchell released a 409 page report citing 89 names…” In other words 89 players that took steroids were listed in this report. This shows that too many players in the MLB take steroids. More player steroid usage could result in the game itself being ruined.

Players agree that those players who took steroids broke multiple insane records. According to Goose Gossage, a retired MLB pitcher, “Bonds, let me tell you, he may have been a Hall of Famer before, but he broke the most sacred record of all, Hank Aaron’s home run record.” In Other words, Hank Aaron’s home run record was a difficult record to be broken. Obviously, steroids give players power that falsifies their true performance without steroids.

Certainly, some people say steroids don’t effect the game in any way. Author Don Yeager, writer for Forbes, explains, “… about all the times that one homer hit by Bonds or strikeout thrown by Clemons was the difference in a game.” This may seem like justification that steroids don’t affect the game, however, multiple issues stand out with this way of thinking: 1. Don Yeager is not a person who personally takes steroids, but knows they are ruining the game. 2. Jeter, a MLB player himself, isn’t into keping suspected steroid users out of the Hall of Fame, but agrees they should not break records. 3. The trio of steroid user, Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens are up by 10% in the Hall of Fame votes received. Therefore, just Don Yeager’s opinion doesn’t overpower the facts and opinions of players who agree that steroid usage should not be in the Hall of Fame.

In short, MLB’s rule of allowing anyone into the Hall of Fame based on votes received is a terrible idea. MLB players that don’t take steroids are getting less votes than players who do. Obviously, this rule needs to change; MLB can’t just let steroid users take over the game. We have a choice to make. We can let MLB players take steroids, ruin the game by breaking insane records, and entering the Hall of Fame: or we can do something about this. Preventing steroid using MLB players from the entering the Hall of Fame will preserve the status given to those Hall of Fame MLB players who are recognized for their natural ability to perform without cheating. I hope we choose wisely.

A.S. believes…Cigarettes should not be produced!

I use to think that smoking cigarettes looked cool and everyone should do it but now I think otherwise. What I’m trying to say is that people smoke a pack of cigarettes everyday so they have a higher chance of a disease. Cigarettes should stop being produced.

This makes sense because if cigarettes are not being produced anymore can live a long healthy life because cigarettes mess with your whole body. Cigarettes can make you feel sick right when you light up your first cigarette. Lungs and your heart are the most damaged when your light up a cigarette and you don’t want those parts to be jacked up.

Imagine you bought a pack of cigarettes and you lit up in front of your child they are going to be exposed to second hand smoking which is still bad for children but not that bad but that is killing their child slowly when they smoke right next to him. They also might be like the younger dumber version of myself and think smoking is really cool so they are going to ask their dad if he can smoke a cigarette even though he is to young to smoke a cigarette his dad said yes because he doesn’t care about his younger child. That young child is just made a mistake by smoking a cigarette he just ruined his life because he is going to be addicted to cigarettes.

The experts and numbers don’t lie. According to Nicola Davis “ men smoking one cigarette a day have a 74% increased of coronary heart disease … women who smoked one a day had 119% increased risk.” What is important to notice here is that one cigarette  day increases men and women’s chance of getting a heart disease. Imagine those people who smoke a pack a day how much of a chance are they are going to have to get a heart disease. It is probably really high for them.

Many experts are saying we are slowly killing our children when we light one up. Experts from daily star points out “453 kids were being exposed to high levels of nicotine, 198 kids were living with a smoker.” The same people from daily star state “though worldwide 40 percent of children are exposed to secondhand smoking.” What’s obvious here is that almost half of the children who live right now are exposed to  secondhand smoking. That means there is a smoker in almost everyone’s family and that smoker is slowly killing it’s children because the children have a high level of nicotine. We don’t want the kids to suffer because a family member smokes almost a pack a day.

According to the author Natalie Rachel “just one cigarette can instantly stuff up your sinuses and sting your stomach  and drive spikes in your heart rate and blood pressure.” Natalie Rachel also states “as smoke travels deeper into the lungs it continues to wreck instant havoc. A video demonstration using cotton in a glass cylinder attached to a compressor to make the simulate lungs to inhale shows how toxic smoke collects from 300 cigarettes.” What’s obvious here is that smoking 300 cigarettes is really toxic and how much of the lungs collect from smoking so many cigarettes so that will make it harder for your lungs to keep on giving you oxygen. Also one cigarette makes you feel sick. No one likes the feeling sick it’s always so disgusting to be sick with all those germs. But you are not sick from those you feel sick because of one cigarette.

Certainly some people say cigarettes should still be produced because if thy work at a tobacco place they sell cigarettes. If cigarettes are not being produced no more no one will ever go to the tobacco place again and their store will go out of business and the employees will never get money to support themselves so they will have to find a new job so they get paid but that will take months for them to get a job. However if they don’t sell or produce cigarettes no more every single person who used to smoke will never light up a cigarette again in their life. Those people will live a healthier life like those people who don’t smoke. They will also not have that much of a chance to get a disease.

As I just proven lighting up a cigarette might be the worst decision of your life. They mess with your whole body like your lungs and the heart. We have a choice to make we can still light up cigarettes and tons of people get a heart disease or cigarettes can stop being produced and everyone lives a healthy life even the kids. What will you chose?

G.M. demands…Cats are good pets!

Many people think cats are horrible pets, but I think otherwise. Cats are good for many things and give you a lot of health benefits that dogs don’t give you. In other words cats are great pets, not just dogs. This makes sense because cats are good for your health. A lot of people think cats are bad pets but they are great. If no one gets a cat then they won’t get the benefits.

Imagine two elderly people one with a cat, and one with a dog. They both have heart disease. The elderly person that has a dog dies from heart disease because they don’t have the benefit of a cat. The elderly person with the cat however lives and dies of old age.

The experts and numbers don’t lie. According to Adam David Mccullough author of Cats and Their Magic Power? “Having a cat as a pet can actually lower your risk of having a heart attack or other cardiovascular diseases by nearly 30%” Adam continues by adding “…Dr. Clinton Rubin’s research has proved that bones can heal when exposed to sound frequencies between 20-50 Hz. A cat’s purr is exactly 25 Hz and 50 Hz.” What is important to notice here is that cats help your health. As they pointed out, cats lower your chance of dying from heart problems. Another quote by CDC states ”About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year” These quotes show that cats show that cats are good for your health Especially for people with heart problems.

Experts also agree that cats are great pets. Christina Heiser an author for NBC.com Forget what you’ve heard. Being a cat lady is healthy. She says “… owning a furry feline instead, of a pup can save you about $300 to $800 a year.” What this quote proves is that cats don’t just help you mentally, but financially. The extra money you have from buying a cat instead of a dog can be put towards other things you need.

There are many more ways cats help you. Dr. Denise Guastello proves some of them she says, “Those who identify themselves as cat lovers are more introverted, open minded and sensitive than dog lovers. Cat lovers are also said to be non-conformists, and scored higher on intelligent than dog lovers… the researchers  surveyed 600 college students.” What this proves is that when you have a cat you are smarter and follow the rules. This also means that people with a cat are helped mentally, financially and in school or college.

On the other hand,  some people think cats are bad pets. The Animal Cognition Journal staes “Fifty to 70 percent of the cats acknowledged the sound of their owners voice by moving their head or perking up their ears. However, only 10 percent actually responded by meowing or moving their tails.” This might sound reasonable. However many issues arise with this thinking, 1. Our furry felines don’t come to us for a reason, 2. Humans don’t  always react when their name is called so why do cats have to. Thus, this post doesn’t prove that cats are bad pets.

As I’ve proven cats are great pets. When they are discarded for the people who do that should really think twice. People shouldn’t just guess that dogs are better than cats when they are equally or even better than dogs. We have a choice to make. We can either let dogs be the center of attention and no one will get the benefits of cats, or we can use cats and everyone that has a cat will be healthier. Cats shouldn’t get thrown to the side because everyone thinks they aren’t good enough. I hope we make the right decision and not discard cats!

C.J. demands… Non-beneficial school times!

Many middle and high school administrators believe that school can start very early, but I think otherwise. I believe school should start later. In other words  the time school starts is not beneficial for students, teachers, parents, siblings, e.t.c., and should start at a later time.

This makes sense because students have shown that adolescent brains  do not shutdown till later at night. Then they have to turn around and wake up very early for school. This seems like cruelty. The students now are tired and not always ready to learn. If schools originally made for learning then why are they forcing them to try to learn this early in the morning. This needs to change for the benefit and health of students.

An example of this unhealthy habit is shown in many schools across the US. Imagine a group of 10th graders going straight to practice after school at around 3:30. After practice gets done around 5:00, but now have to go to work to make a living for his or hers family. Then at 8:00 clock he or she is done. They go home eat dinner for half an hour. It is 8:30, they relive that they have at least a good 3 hours of homework. It is 11:30 and they go on there phone for half an hour checking everything. Finally at 12:00 they hit the hay. They wake up at 5:45 to get ready for school. They just got roughly about 5 hours and 4 5 minutes of sleep. This definitely will not last the whole day and to think they must do this everyday. These ungrateful school times must change.

Many advanced scientist believe that school times must change. According to the Washington Post by: Valerie  Strauss “ sleep sleep researchers have said for years that most teens can’t easily fall asleep until about 11:00 p.m., experts say, and their brains stay in sleep mode until at least 8:00 a.m.” This small quote may not look like a lot but in the long run it does. For example it proves that young adults brains to not fully shut down and wake up till the given times. It also shows signs that teens are getting deprived of sleep; That is not ok.

Additionally the Center for Disease Control ( CDC ) states “ Fewer than 1 in 5 middle and high schools in the US began the school day at the recommend 8:30 start time or later.” The same article states “ Too-early start times can keep students from getting the sleep they need for health, safety, and academic success, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.” The AAP and CDC prove that not a lot of schools across the United States are helping these young adults get the sleep they need to succeed. I find this fact sad that only 20% of schools start at about 8:30 and 80% start later. This will not help students grow academically and will cause problems.

This is not an isolated example. The AAP states “ Many studies have documented that the average adolescent in the US is chronically sleep-deprived and pathologically sleepy. A National Sleep Foundation poll found 59 percent  of 6th through 8th graders and 87 percent of high school students in the US were getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep on school nights.” The studies show that more than half of young adults around the US are not getting the sleep they need. Also the terrifying thing is that this is not a healthy habit. If schools are not realizing this than things need to change and fast.

Clearly there is another side to this argument. The other side is found in the Washington Post by Donna St.George states “ The authors report that delayed school times do not replace the need for other interventions that can improve sleep among adolescent.” This does make a good point but is easily out weighted by the good that comes from starting school later. For example if we start school later kids could eat a healthier breakfast, stay with family more, and lots of other things. It also will decrease the amount of crashes caused by sleepy drivers.  Furthermore school times need to change to a later time.

As I’ve proven many times middle and high school start times and not acceptable. Students are getting deprived of sleep and that is not healthy. We most change the time school starts for the benefit of the next generation. If school start to late students will not get a lot of benefits out of school and remember important details. We have a choice to make. We can either have these young adults suffer and go to school way to early, or we can change the start time have healthy, safe, and educated kids. I hope for the sake of humanity we choose wisely and make school better.

K.T. shouts…Schools should start later!

Schools start too early in the morning. Schools should start later in the morning. Some school administrators believe that schools should start early in the morning for K-12, but I disagree. Schools should have a later start time. In other words, some schools start earlier than 8:00 a.m, that is way too early to get kids mind focused and read to go.

This makes sense because kids are waking up and going to schools way to early. Kids are not getting enough hours of sleep that they should be provided. They can’t get their brain focused and set that early in the morning. If there is so much research that proves schools should start later, then why are schools still starting so early?

Imagine if a kid goes to a school that starts at 7:00, and he is always distracted and can never focus. He can’t focus because he is always tired. He is constantly fighting the hard urge to not fall asleep, so he can at least try to focus. He makes it through the day without falling asleep and all he hears now is his parents fighting and yelling, like they always do every night. And now it is 12:00 a.m and he is still awake.

Experts also agree that schools should start later. According to the text Let Them Sleep:AAP Recommends delaying Start Times of Middle and High Schools to Combat Teen Sleep Deprivation, “Studies show that adolescents who don’t get enough sleep often suffer physical and mental health problems…” The same website states that, “A National Sleep Foundation poll found 59 percent of 6th through 8th graders and 87 percent of high school students in the U.S were getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep on school nights.” Over half of 6th-12th graders in the U.S are not getting the hours of sleep needed.

Lucas Gelfond the author of Hit the Snooze: Discussing the Advantages and Disadvantages of a Late Start to the School Day says, “…waking up to get to school early strains her sleep and work schedule.’ By eighth period. I’m usually about to fall asleep in class and you just finally can’t focus towards the end of the day…” Kids can hardly stay up during the day, they are so tired and can’t concentrate.

Certainly, some people say that having a later school starting time is a horrible idea. The same text by Lucas Gelfond, Hit the Snooze: Discussing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Late Start to the School Day says, “…traffic concerns cold negate any real benefits. Almost 90 percent of respondents in a chronicle poll of 220 students said that they would struggle to get to school at a later time because of traffic.” This may seem like a real issue with how traffic could be a struggle. However, several issues arise with this way of thinking:1. Children’s health should be more important than traffic. 2. Lucan Gelfond knows nothing about children’s health. Therefore, this one persons review is nothing compared to all the other research.

As I’ve proven, K-12 kids are not getting enough hours of sleep to live a healthy childhood. Kids can’t concentrate in school anymore with these crazy start times. We have a choice to make. We can choose to keep these early starting times and have out kids not focus in school and fall asleep in class, or we can have our schools change the starting times and allow our kids to get enough sleep, so they are healthy, and focus during school. I hope for all sake of kids health and success, that we change the starting times to a later start time.
